My favorite way to teach Communication IQ™ is when I get to incorporate my faith. Just like in life, Scripture is filled with examples of how these communication styles show up. One of my favorite passages to reference is Romans 12. What follows is not meant to be a theological exegesis, but rather an illustration of how these distinct communication styles can be seen throughout the Bible.

“Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith (Mover); if service, in his serving (Doer); or the one who teaches, in his teaching (Contemplator); or the one who exhorts, in his exhortation (Influencer); the one who gives, with generosity (Producer); the one who leads, with diligence (Shaper); the one who shows mercy, with cheerfulness (Responder).” Romans 12:6–8 (NASB)

Mover: Prophecy and faith are hallmarks of the Mover Communication Style. Like Old Testament prophets, Movers are quick to confront injustice and speak truth boldly when God’s people fall short of His standards. They’re visionaries, filled with faith even when the details are unclear. They are motivated by a deep desire to see God’s purposes fulfilled.

Doer: The Doer Communication Style is action-oriented. They instinctively spot practical and physical needs others might miss and jump in to help without being asked. Doers have servant hearts and complete tasks with diligence and faithfulness—even when it’s inconvenient. They find joy in meeting tangible needs.

Contemplator: Contemplators are natural teachers. Lifelong learners at heart, they dig deep into subjects until they grasp their core truths. Their thoughtful, insightful understanding allows them to teach with wisdom and clarity, unpacking complex ideas in a way others can understand and apply.

Influencer: Encouragement is the Influencer’s default mode. They wake up ready to cheer others on, and their words are more than flattery—they are sincere, uplifting, and rooted in a deep belief in people’s potential. Influencers have a spiritual instinct to call out the gold in others and help them see who God created them to be.

Producer: Producers are generous, especially when they trust their resources will be used wisely. In health, their desire is to create wealth not for personal gain, but to give generously both now and in the future. Their giving is thoughtful and strategic, and they love hearing how their investment made a difference.

Shaper:  Leadership is the Shaper’s driving passion. While they’re willing to follow when a strong plan is in place, they’ll gladly step up when needed. Shapers are visionaries who see the big picture. They start with the end in mind and work backward, strategizing the steps to reach the goal with focus and drive.

Responder: Overflowing with mercy and compassion, Responders reflect the heart of Jesus. They stop for the one—the hurting, the overlooked, the lonely, and even the leader who needs encouragement. Their passion to protect and please others flows from their deep empathy. Being present with those in need is a joy and calling for them.

God has entrusted each of us with unique gifts, not just for personal fulfillment, but to build up the people and world around us. When we grow in self-awareness and walk in step with the Spirit, these Communication Styles become gifts for healing, connection, and Kingdom impact.
